The Wienerwald was designated a “Biosphere Reserve” by UNESCO in 2005. The UNESCO concept is a comprehensive protection and development instrument. As it combines protection and use and involves people, it is tailor-made for cultural landscapes with high natural values. The aim of a biosphere reserve is to protect nature where habitats and species need this protection and at the same time to develop the region into a living region for responsible management and action. Zoning of the landscape into three different use or development categories is intended to take account of the achievement of this goal. The Biosphärenpark Wienerwald Management GmbH supports sustainable development in the region through relevant activities and network building.
