The project “Network Development in Preparation for an Austrian Bioeconomy Cluster” has laid the foundation in recent years for a structured and widely anchored bioeconomy platform in Austria. Today, Bioeconomy Austria is a functioning and expanding network with over 400 partners – and, more recently, also institutionally established as an association.
What has been achieved?
Together with regional partners, a robust structure has been established: thematic hubs, a shared brand, a communication system, an initial impact monitoring framework, and concrete innovation projects demonstrate the successful transition from concept to implementation. In particular, the close cooperation within the regions – addressing topics such as lightweight timber construction, biogenic adhesives, and sustainable biomass utilization – has showcased the significant potential of Austria’s bioeconomy.
Through more than 40 events – from the Bioeconomy Austria Summit to excursions and co-creation workshops – knowledge exchange has been strengthened, expertise consolidated, and new collaborations initiated. The project has given rise to initial research and innovation initiatives – including ReLiAp, BIOCHARm, and Wood Vision Labs. The number of network partners actively contributing to events, project concepts, or thematic processes has steadily increased.
A key milestone was the establishment of the Bioeconomy Austria Association. This step not only secured the network formally but also strengthened it strategically – with clearly defined responsibilities in coordination, communication, project development, and monitoring.
What’s next?
The new project phase will broaden the thematic scope: the wood-based bioeconomy will remain a core foundation – for instance, in lightweight construction, circular renovation, and novel wood applications. At the same time, we are opening up more strongly to other value chains: from agriculture to aquatic systems, from biogenic residues to bio-based chemistry.
Geographically, the network will also expand – for example, through enhanced European collaboration with initiatives such as the Bioregions Facility, the Biosolutions Coalition, and the European Bioeconomy Clusters Alliance.
Today, Bioeconomy Austria is more than a project: it is the central hub for a sustainable, circular-oriented economy in Austria.
We would like to thank all those who have joined us on this journey – and warmly invite everyone interested in the bioeconomy to become part of the network!
