Circularity Milestone

Lenzing/Södra: Europe's Largest Textile Recycling Project Receives €10 Million Funding

In collaboration with the Swedish pulp producer Södra, our network partner Lenzing AG has taken a significant step towards a circular future. Their joint project “LIFE TREATS” has been supported by the LIFE 2022 programme with a €10 million EU grant to further develop the recycling of textile waste on an industrial scale. Lenzing makes a crucial contribution here with its expertise in recycling and its innovative REFIBRA™ technology.

Thanks to this project, it will be possible in the future to process and recycle a variety of complex coloured textiles. As part of this project, which starts in the second quarter of 2023 and will run for four and a half years, a capacity to produce 60,000 tonnes of pulp will be created at Södra’s plant in Mörrum, which will consist of 50 percent recycled material and 50 percent renewable pulp from sustainable forestry. The collaboration significantly contributes to the EU action plan for a circular economy and is supported by the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA).
