Bioeconomy Austria Wins the 2026 Cluster Networking Award

The project “Building a Network in Preparation for an Austrian Bioeconomy Cluster: Bioeconomy Austria” was awarded first place in the Cluster Networking Award at the 2026 Annual Cluster Conference organised by the Federal Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism (BMWET). The award recognises outstanding collaborative projects that drive innovation and create economic value by bringing together businesses, research institutions and cluster organisations.

The Bioeconomy Austria project laid the foundation for a nationwide network of stakeholders in Austria’s bioeconomy. The award recognises these successful networking efforts and highlights the importance of collaboration across sectors and organisational boundaries. The project also led to the establishment of the Bioeconomy Austria association, which continues to build on these connections over the long term.

From the Initial Project Phase to a Lasting Network

The project established a nationwide platform connecting stakeholders from the forestry and wood-based industries, agriculture, the aquatic bioeconomy, as well as industry, research and innovation. Its aim was to bring together existing expertise, strengthen cross-sector exchange and identify opportunities for joint innovation.

The Bioeconomy Austria association, which emerged from the project, is continuing this work. Its key priorities include fostering cross-sector collaboration, developing joint initiatives and transferring knowledge and innovation into practical business applications. The award therefore recognises not only the success of the initial project but also the importance of an established, long-term networking structure for advancing Austria’s bioeconomy.

Clusters as Partners in Industrial Transformation

This year’s Annual Cluster Conference was held under the theme “Clusters and Austria’s Industrial Strategy 2035: Shaping the Future with Smart Clusters”. Alongside Bioeconomy Austria, the “SILICON ALPS European Cross-Cluster Project-Hub” received second place, while “New Energy for Industry – NEFI” took third place. The Impulse Award went to the “Food Masterclass” of the Styrian Food Hub.

For Bioeconomy Austria, winning first place is both a recognition of its achievements and a commitment to the future. The connections established during the initial project phase will be further strengthened through the association and translated into concrete partnerships, projects and commercial applications. In doing so, Bioeconomy Austria contributes to the development of a competitive, resource-efficient and bio-based economy in Austria.
