Bioeconomy Austria’s information series “StoffWechsel” continues with its next edition: Following LIGNIN and DIGESTATE, this issue focuses on STRAW.
StoffWechsel aims to make the bioeconomy and its future potential more tangible. Each edition provides a concise overview of selected bio-based raw materials, exploring their historical development, current applications, future potential and challenges.
STRAW: From a Traditional Material to a Key Resource
Straw has been a versatile material for centuries. Today, it is primarily used as a source of soil organic matter and as animal bedding, or as a building material. In the future, it could become increasingly important as a feedstock for bio-based materials, chemicals and fuels. However, straw is not available in unlimited quantities. The evolution of its use highlights both the opportunities and challenges of sustainably using regional raw materials.
