Tyrolean Wertholzsubmission 2026

The Tyrolean Nadel-Wertholzsubmission (conifer premium timber submission) took place for the 13th time in 2026. A total of 550 selected logs, amounting to around 560 cubic metres of timber from across Tyrol – with a few also coming from Vorarlberg – were auctioned to the highest bidders. The submission is organised by the Tyrol Forest Association in cooperation with the Tyrol Chamber of Agriculture. As a project partner of Bioeconomy Austria, proHolz Tirol attended the public viewing day at the beginning of February and gained an impression of the premium timber displayed along a forest road.

Once again, the focus was on particularly high-quality large-diameter logs of spruce, larch, fir, Swiss stone pine and pine. “In general, there is demand for large, as straight as possible, fine-grained and knot-free logs, ideally without spiral grain or resin pockets,” explains Josef Fuchs, member of the proHolz board and head of the Tyrol Forest Association. These characteristics allow for high-value processing, for example into veneer, tonewood for musical instruments, furniture, interior fittings, carving wood or shingles.

Value-Oriented Use in the Context of the Bioeconomy

Premium timber submissions are vivid practical examples of the objectives of Austria’s national bioeconomy strategy. One key aspect is the value-oriented use of biogenic raw materials – particularly wood as a regionally available, renewable resource.

Instead of using high-quality logs for standard applications, the submission process ensures that special qualities are identified, transparently evaluated and allocated to companies that can utilise them in the best possible way. This leads to the creation of additional long-lasting, high-quality products with high added value and long-term carbon storage.

The Tyrolean conifer premium timber submission thus exemplifies how sustainable forest management, market transparency and quality orientation interact – and how wood can be used as efficiently and value-enhancing as possible in line with the principles of the bioeconomy.
